We have a rabbit….who has been living in with our chickens for over a year. In this time the rabbit (who is male, we found out) has “become” a chicken.
We thought it was cute at first. He would eat with them, run around with them, he had friends now since his other bunny friends had died, he would sleep in the coop with the chicks…BUT then I also saw him mating with them! Ugh! It was not okay – I was a little traumatized – it definitely should not happen. I saw him mating more and more with all of the girls. They hated it and would constantly be running from him. He is a testosterone bunny on a mission and couldn’t get enough. I put a trail cam out in the cage to catch who had killed one of my beloved chicks…and instead caught him in the act and then looking at the camera taunting me! (Warning pictures are not right…)
So this has been going on for awhile and I have been trying to find a solution. I kicked him out of the coop completely and he had free run of the yard – this wasn’t good enough and he dug his way back into the coop. I could put him back into the little rabbit cage – but that just doesn’t seem right now that he has been a free bunny for over a year. BUT the final straw that made me make a change was when I went to put the girls away one night and the bunny was in the coop with them and he was on one of the ladies who was trying to sleep! They can’t even get a break at night in their coop. The bunny had pulled out a ton of the chicks feathers and she was just laying there traumatized (I’m sure). I got that bunny and threw him off….and before I could even turn around he was bouncing back on her! THAT WAS IT!
Bunny has now found a new home.
