The Big Hens’ Chicken Coop

A couple years ago when we decided to get chickens we turned our old dog house (that had insulation, windows, and electricity) to the new chicken coop.  It is a perfect area and the house was a perfect size — with a few minor changes we made it from a great dog house…to an even better chicken coop!

(Do you see that hole under the door???  That is where our rabbit dug to go in and out…and has since been kicked out by a huge squirrel that is now living under there!)

Sometimes I have to pull the nesting boxes out because they smashed an egg and I need to clean them.  Overall, the ladies prefer the 3 bottom nesting boxes…and this is Broody in the middle box.  She has that name for a reason!  I am constantly trying to get her to stop brooding!  2016-05-09 13.40.01

That little chicken devil that is pretending to eat…well he is really watching me with his devil eye.  You turn your back on him and he will pounce on you!   He is our only rooster…and he is a mean one!2016-05-09 13.40.07

This is their outdoor area.  When the lilacs are in full bloom they are perfect shade!2016-05-09 13.40.31

Throughout the years we have added a couple more comfort items…like this lean-to for more protection from the snowy winters (and shade for the hot summers).  These chickens have it good! 2016-05-09 13.40.52 2016-05-09 13.41.06
